Tools for Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction is a series of 14 guidance notes for use by development organisations in adapting programming, project appraisal and evaluation tools to mainstream disaster risk reduction into their development work in hazard-prone countries. The series is also of relevance to stakeholders involved in climate change adaptation. This guidance note explains how sustainable livelihoods (SL) thinking and methods can support the incorporation of natural hazards and associated disaster risk into development project planning. It briefly introduces SL thinking and explains its application to projects and programmes, with particular emphasis on its relevance to hazards and disasters. It reviews methods used in SL approaches to assess hazards, vulnerability and risk, and discusses other factors in applying SL to project cycle management.
