The speaker compared three recent disasters in Guatemala, the Philippines and Bangladesh. The focus of the discussion centred on the links between disaster areas, the availability of land and livelihood opportunities, and disaster response and risk reduction.
The speaker also discussed with the Shelter Meeting participants whether the shelter sector should define itself more widely, and whether the sector should employ on a regular basis, expertise in disciplines such as geology, climatology, and economics. The discussion later explored how, learning from previous mistakes, the capacity of communities might be improved, especially in response to future risk.
