The papers in this volume were prepared as background materials for the conference on The future of disaster risk: building safer cities held at the World Bank from December 4 to December 6, 2002. The conference explored a range of issues related to disaster vulnerability and identified priorities for development and disaster prevention activities to ensure safer cities in the future.
