In recent years, there have been frequent large earthquakes, such as the 2004Mid-Niigata Prefecture Earthquake and the 2005 Fukuoka Seihou-oki Earthquake. In our country, there is no knowing when and where such earthquakes could occur. Improving the seismic resistance of school facilities is a pressing issue, becausechildren spend a large part of their daily lives in school, and schools need tosecure the safety of children as well as act as emergency evacuation facilities forlocal communities when an earthquake occurs.
