This short background paper is an attempt to shed light on some of the issues of IDPs in Bangladesh. The paper will focus three categories of IDPs. The first category, climate IDPs, focuses on the displacement of people caused by riverbank erosions and cyclones. The next
section, conflict IDPs, deals with the ethnic conflict in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) and shows how developmental projects and military intervention led to the creation of a large number of IDPs. This section also discusses the displacement of religious minorities, particularly the Hindus and people belonging to the Ahmadi sect. The final section talks about several other sources of displacements such as people evicted from slums and brothels. All these three sections will consider relevant legal issues and governmental measures that affect the manifold crisis of the displaced people.
