"Building Back Better" book</a> - <em>Michal Lyons, Practical Action</em></p></td></tr><tr><td class="freetime">18:00</td><td class="freeevent"><strong>Close</strong></td></tr></tbody></table><p><a name="keyoutcomes"></a></p><p>Some of the key outcomes from SM10a are listed below.</p><p><strong><br />Initiatives announced:</strong></p><p> </p><p><strong><br />- Health implications in urban situations</strong><br />Shelter Centre presented a mini-project launch to include health inputs in shelter guidelines and regional shelter training.</p><p><strong><br />- Regional Training Toolkit</strong><br />After having presented a proposal for regional training at SM09b, Shelter Centre led an informal consultation with Shelter Meeting participants prior to finalising a regional training programme with ECHO and partners, including interested IASC Clusters.</p><p><strong><br />- Shelter after Disaster course and conference</strong><br />Charles Parrack of Oxford Brookes University announced the forthcoming CENDEP postgraduate certificate course in Shelter after Disaster, starting in February 2010 and the two-day Shelter Conference <em>‘Improving learning and practice in the humanitarian shelter sector ‘. </em>The event will be hosted by CENDEP and CARE International UK in September 2010.</p><p><strong><br />- Cooperation in shelter developments</strong><br />Eelko Brouwer of the Netherlands Red Cross presented the Benelux RC Societies’ project to set up a Shelter Research Unit, responsible for the development of innovative shelter solutions and sharing of existing shelter resources and practices.</p><p><strong><br />- GIS E-learning project</strong><br />Juan Jose Moya Fornieles presented CartONG plan for 2010-2011 to develop GIS training modules with a distance learning method.</p><p><strong><br />Projects under review:</strong></p><p> </p><p><strong><br />- Shelter Centre Transitional Shelter Guidelines</strong><br />IOM and Shelter Centre presented current and planned revisions of the Transitional Shelter Guidelines, on the basis of an agreement made to conduct case study evaluations.</p><p><strong><br />- Shelter Centre Transitional Shelter Standards & Prototypes Projects</strong><br />Shelter Centre presented progress to date on these projects as well as targets to be met by SM10b and SM11a. Shelter Centre and manufacturers will present progress on the test regime and winterisation options at SM10b and finalise the test regime and standards by SM11a. Six shelter manufacturers presented their Stockpiled Transitional Shelter Prototypes, developed following feedback from SM09b.</p><p><strong><br />- Shelter after Disaster: Strategies for transitional settlement and reconstruction</strong><br />Shelter Centre presented the revised draft of Shelter after Disaster and announced its new launch date at SM10b, in December 2010.</p><p><strong><br />- New urban guidelines</strong><br />Kate Crawford of CARE International and Martin Suvatne of NRC presented the latest version of the Urban Assistance Guidelines, a support tool for practitioners to identify shelter requirements for people displaced into or affected within urban areas.</p><p><strong><br />- The Shelter Funding Review</strong><br />Elizabeth Babister of CARE International presented progress to date on the review that is taking place on how donors fund shelter related activities.</p><p><strong><br />- “Shelter Projects” book 2009</strong><br />Sandra D’Urzo of IFRC and Esteban Leon of UN-HABITAT provided an update of the forthcoming Shelter projects 2009 project and publication.</p><p> </p><p><strong><br />Publications and resources launched:<br /></strong><strong><br />- Transitional Shelter Innovations Case Study<br /></strong>Kim Scriven of ALNAP announced the publication of ‘<em>Transitional Shelters’</em>, authored by Shelter Centre and published on ALNAP Innovations in May 2010.</p><p><strong><br />- Safer Homes, Stronger Communities: A Handbook for Reconstructing after Natural Disasters</strong><br />Jennifer Duyne Barenstein on behalf of the World Bank presented the contents of: ‘<em>Safer Homes, Stronger Communities: A Handbook for Reconstructing after Natural Disasters’ </em>published in January 2010.</p><p><strong><br />- "Building Back Better" book</strong><br />Michal Lyons on behalf of Practical Action presented the new book <em>‘Building Back Better. Delivering people-centred housing reconstruction at scale’, </em>developed by Practical Action, London South Bank University and IFRC, and published in May 2010.</p><p> </p><p><strong><br />- Joint Inter-Agency Profiling Services</strong><br />Sarah Elliot of UNHCR provided an introduction to the newly created Joint IDP Profiling Service (JIPS), established by DRC, NRC-IDMC, UNFPA and UNHCR to assist humanitarian agencies in obtaining and updating reliable data on internally displaced populations.</p><p><strong><br />- ASPIRE Tool</strong><br />Ian Pearce of Habitat for Humanity Great Britain and Victoria Batchelor of Arup International Development gave an overview of ASPIRE, an assessment tool developed to evaluate the long-term impact of shelter programmes and used to assess HFH’s tsunami-response programme.</p><p>Tom Corsellis, Shelter Centre</p>
