One Room Shelter Program - building resilience through shelter reconstruction

1 – One Room Shelter Program – Building resilience trough shelter reconstruction

2 – Following the achievements of the 2010 ORS program that supported the reconstruction of 38,000 shelters thought Pakistan, IOM reassessed the needs and constraints that beneficiaries had to safely reconstruct their shelter and incorporated those lessons learned in the following 2011 ORS program. The new program covering another 22,500 households focused in providing not only a cash grant but also specific and continued technical trainings on how to improve vernacular construction practices to minimize shelter vulnerability to floods. IOM developed for this in partnership with Heritage Foundation (local architectural and heritage preservation organization) a full training package including a DRR construction manual  with 7 vernacular construction typologies derived from a survey of local practices and traditions, training materials for field teams, the strategy for the revitalization and improvement of the use of lime in construction and the delivery of a training of trainers for local implementing partners followed by a 7 month “ in the field” technical mentoring assistance program.
