The speakers working with The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), described how they trained refugee camp inhabitants to manage their own camps. Focusing on Sri Lanka, they argued that the dispersed nature of the camps made them hard to manage centrally and that training in self management was the appropriate strategy.
Advice was given on some the common mistakes trainers can make, such as mistaking nods for understanding, not allowing enough time for reflection or repetition, or assuming knowledge of basics.
NRC had a portfolio of training modules based upon the NRC `Camp Management Toolkit`, however the trainers emphasised that it was good practice to customise the training to every new circumstance.
