In 2002, Pakistani women experienced about 2.4 million
unintended pregnancies;* nearly 900,000 of these pregnancies
were terminated by induced abortion. Because abortion is
legal only in very limited circumstances, women who seek it
subject themselves to clandestine and often unsafe procedures.
Poor women, in particular, are forced by circumstances
to rely on untrained providers.
